Have you ever planted a seed with a child?
The excitement is often immediate. Each day they eagerly check the pot, looking for signs of growth and asking, “Has it grown yet?” Yet for many days, nothing seems to happen. Beneath the surface, however, something remarkable is taking place. Roots are forming. Strength is developing. The foundations for future growth are being established long before the first green shoot appears.
The early years are much the same.
While we see children learning new skills and reaching important milestones each day, some of the most significant growth is happening beneath the surface. Character is forming. Confidence is growing. Relationships are deepening. Resilience is developing. Foundations of faith are taking root. Like the roots of a young plant, these foundations provide the strength and stability needed for future growth.
This is what families can expect from Christian education in the early years.
At Maranatha, Christian education is the daily expression of God’s love in the learning environment. Families can expect their children to be known, valued and nurtured as they develop a sense of belonging, discover the wonder of God’s world, are equipped for life and learning, and learn to serve others with kindness and purpose.
What makes Christian education distinctive is that it begins with the belief that every child is uniquely created in God’s image, deeply loved by their Creator, and gifted with purpose and potential. This belief shapes the way we see children, the relationships we build, the environments we create and the curriculum we provide. Learning is not simply about acquiring knowledge and skills; it is about nurturing the whole child and supporting them to grow in faith, character, wisdom and confidence.
Christian education is expressed through both intentional faith experiences and everyday learning. Children engage with Bible stories, prayer, worship and conversations about God, while also learning to recognise His goodness, creativity and care throughout the world around them. Biblical truths are woven through our curriculum, helping children understand that God is the Creator, that they are deeply loved by Him, and that they are called to love and serve others. Whether exploring the wonders of creation, celebrating acts of kindness, asking thoughtful questions, or learning how to care for others, children are encouraged to understand that God is present in every part of life and learning.
Our philosophy is captured through four aspirations: Belong, Discover, Be Equipped and Serve.
Children first need to experience a deep sense of belonging. Like healthy soil that supports growth, nurturing relationships help children feel safe, valued and known. Through caring interactions with educators and peers, they begin to understand that they are part of a community and are loved by God.
From this foundation, children are encouraged to discover. Through play, inquiry and exploration, they investigate God’s world with curiosity and wonder. Whether observing insects in the garden, creating artwork, building with blocks or asking thoughtful questions, children develop a love of learning and an appreciation for the beauty and creativity of God’s creation.
As children grow, we seek to equip them for life and learning. Alongside literacy, numeracy and critical thinking, we intentionally nurture resilience, perseverance, self-regulation, wisdom and kindness. These qualities help children navigate challenges with confidence and develop the dispositions needed to thrive.
We also encourage children to serve. Even our youngest learners can make a meaningful difference. Through everyday opportunities to help, encourage, include and care for others, children learn that God has created them with purpose and gifted them to serve and bless those around them.
Christian education is woven through both the intentional faith experiences and the ordinary moments of each day. It is seen in the Bible stories we share, the prayers we pray, the worship we enjoy together, how conflicts are resolved, how gratitude is cultivated, how children are encouraged after setbacks, and how educators model God’s love through their words, actions and relationships. In these everyday moments, children learn that faith is not simply something we talk about, but something we live.
Families play an essential role in this journey. Just as a seed grows best when provided with the right conditions, children flourish when home, school and church work together. Through everyday moments of conversation, prayer, encouragement, wonder and service, children learn that faith is woven into all areas of life.
As Scripture reminds us, “Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him” (Colossians 2:7). In many ways, Christian education in the early years is about nurturing roots that will support a lifetime of learning, faith and growth.
Every gardener knows that growth takes time. The tallest tree once existed as a tiny seed hidden beneath the soil. In the same way, the faith, character, curiosity and resilience nurtured in the early years continue to grow long after children leave our classrooms. While we may not always see the results immediately, we trust that God is at work, lovingly cultivating each child for His purposes, helping them to flourish and bear fruit in His perfect timing.
