God’s unbreakable promises – Joshua 23:14
During our life we will all experience times of happiness and deep sadness. We will be cared for by some people and hurt by others. Different relationships will start, flourish, diminish and even fracture. Promises and commitments will be kept and broken. However, we can always rely on the promises of God. They alone are unbreakable.
Joshua gave a farewell speech to the Israelites at the end of his life. He reminded them that God has kept every promise he made. Joshua encourages the Israelites to continue to trust God. The bible is full of promises both in the Old and New Testament. A number were also meant for the future followers of Jesus.
“Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.
Joshua 23:14
I see the promises of God as an anchor, antidote and armament. An anchor will stop a boat from drifting in heavy wind or sea. God’s promises are a firm foundation no matter what our life circumstances are. Examples include comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4), provision (Philippians 4:19) and answered prayer (1 John 5:14). Our young people today are experiencing unprecedented levels of poor mental health and loneliness. The promises of God are our remedy to rising uncertainty (Proverbs 3:5-6), anxiety (Joshua 1:9) and exhaustion (Isaiah 40:29-31 and Matthew 11:28-30). Jesus used scriptures from Deuteronomy when tempted in the desert. We can also use the sword of the Spirit when faced with times of temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13), challenge and doubt (John 3:16 and 1 John 1:9).
Often a promise of God requires something from us as well. We must take the way out that God offers us when we are tempted (1 Corinthians 10:13). The promise of guidance requires us to submit to God (Proverbs 3:5-6). We must seek comfort from God and not unhelpful places (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). It is sad when we don’t stand on His promises and instead turn to various idols.
God doesn’t promise a life free of suffering. Although we are blessed in many ways there is no guarantee of wealth, health and happiness. However, Jesus talked about an abundant life or life to the full. Tim Keller summed it up well when he said “Jesus Christ did not suffer so that you would not suffer. He suffered so that when you suffer, you’ll become more like him. The gospel does not promise you better life circumstances; it promises you a better life.”
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
John 10:10
My deep hope is our students will embrace the promises of God in 2025. They will become a foundation, source of comfort and weapon for them. May all of us live a life built on the unbreakable promises of God.
