As I look back over my teaching career, I am filled with gratitude for the path that led me to Maranatha Christian School. Half of my professional life as an educator has been spent here, but my journey began in South Africa and New Zealand, where I taught in a variety of schools before discovering my true calling within the world of Christian education.
While living in New Zealand, I felt a strong desire to find a school where faith and learning could go hand in hand. In 2008, my family and I visited Melbourne, and I took the opportunity to explore Maranatha Christian School and Waverley Christian College. At the time, Melbourne’s weather and lifestyle didn’t quite win us over, and we returned to New Zealand. However, just over a year later, in September 2009, I saw a job advertised at Maranatha. After much prayer and discussion, I decided to apply.
The interview process was unlike any I had experienced before. Conducted over the phone, I was interviewed by six people all gathered in the principal’s office. What truly surprised me was being asked to pray at the end of the interview—a first for me. Two weeks later, I was offered the position, a clear sign to me that God was guiding my steps—especially since no one had even seen my face!
I began my journey at Maranatha in January 2010. I will never forget the words of the principal, Mr. Vernon Clarke, who told me, “Please do not think that because this is a Christian school, all students will be walking with Bibles under their arms. You are free to be a shining light to these students and share what you know from the Bible.” This set the tone for my role as both a teacher and a mentor.
Over the past 16 years, my faith has grown alongside my love for Maranatha and Christian education. As a teacher, I have gained a wide range of professional, personal, and spiritual experiences. The school offers a positive work environment, a healthy work-life balance, and a deep sense of belonging within a vibrant, caring community. I have cherished the opportunity to live and teach according to Christian principles, sharing God’s Word and modeling Christian service every day. My responsibilities have included nurturing students’ wellbeing, building strong relationships with parents and colleagues, and participating in a wide range of co-curricular activities.
As a parent of a student at Maranatha, I have witnessed firsthand how the school reinforces spiritual values at home. Through regular communication, pastoral care, and helpful resources, I have been well-informed about my child’s spiritual, social, and academic development. Our family has been encouraged to read God’s Word and pray together, strengthening our faith and character within a Christ-centred environment.
