Year 6 Parliament Incursion

Year 6 Maranatha Students Brings Civics to Life Through Parliament Incursion

Our Year 6 students have been exploring how Australia is governed as part of their Civics and Citizenship learning, in preparation for their upcoming Canberra camp. Their learning came to life through a recent Parliament incursion, where students participated in hands‑on activities designed to mirror real democratic processes. Taking on roles such as voters, vote counters and Senators, students experienced firsthand how opinions are expressed, votes are counted and decisions are made through a majority.
Students first participated in a mock vote exploring whether Australia should elect a President or continue with a Governor General, before debating and voting on a proposed Senate bill to lower the legal driving age to 16. Through consideration and discussion and a genuine commitment to doing their best in every role, students developed a deeper understanding of leadership, responsibility and the importance of being an active and informed member of their community. Experiences such as these help bring classroom learning to life, equipping students with the knowledge, confidence and skills they will continue to build on during their Canberra experience and beyond.
